19 May 1965 – The Little Joe II booster shreds itself to pieces over Whitesands, during launch abort test A-003. This was an actual, unintended abort situation, and it proved that the Launch Escape System could do its job, and do its job well.
The Command Module (BP-22) landed safely under parachute.
The initial test altitude was to be 120,000 feet, to demonstrate a high-altitude abort test. However, this mission helped prove a low-altitude abort, with Mach number, dynamic pressure, and altitude being similar to both the Saturn IB and Saturn V launch trajectories.
